His family has died and he has a wife that is continually sick, and the only form of happiness he has is from his wife's cousin Mattie. This, however, at times proves to be hard because of Ethan's wifes interference. Nothing seems to be going in Ethan's favor. The main theme of the book is failure, and this is shown through marrying his wife, not being able to stand up to his wife, and his involvement concerning the "smash up." The first way failure is shown in the book is through the marriage of Ethan and his wife. He married her because she had tried to help his mother recover from an illness, and once his mother died he could not bear the thought of living in the house alone. His wife was seven years his senior and always seemed to have some kind of illness. It seemed all she ever did was complain, and he resented this because it stifled his growing soul. Since his wife was continuously ill, and her cousin needed a place to stay, they took her in to help around the house. Ethan took an immediate propensity to her cousin, Mattie, because she brought a bright light upon his dismal day. She told him without any discussion that Mattie had to go. Ethan could not find the words to make her alter her decision. His wife also decided that Mattie had to leave the next day itself and Ethan could not do anything about it. It was stated in the book that his wife had the upper hand in the house by the line "Now she [his wife] had mastered him [Ethan] and he obeyed her." Ethan just could not find the right things to say and it was because of his failure of not being able to stand up to his wife, he was going to lose the only thing that made him happy. These are all questions we can ask as each line contradicts the next. Poe is keeping us in suspense. Its the feeling of anxiety. Where, what or when will something happen next? Suspense is kept through out the story, and starts at the first line True! Nervous VERY, very, dreadfully nervous. Why is the narrator nervous? The reader is going too want to read on to find the answer. Dashes, commas and a use of a rhetorical question implies the narrator is addressing the reader in a dramatic manner. So I opened it you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily until, at length, a single dim ray, like the thread of a spider. Time also goes fast within the story. For example: In an instant I dragged him to the floor I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done. This is the description of the death of the old man. These are the only details the narrator tells us, implying hes a perfectionist. We retrieve this view of the narrator because of the swift speed of which he kills the old man. The narrator is also a sadistic person, due to the way he smiled gaily after the quick death. Other examples of a quick pace are towards/ at the end. Villans! I shrieked, dissemble no more! I admit the deed! tear up the planks! here, here! it is the beating of his hideous heart.' From the final line of the story we have the impression hes mad because of the way he admits the deeds. Short sentences, which are straight to the point, increase the pace of the text. Also, due to the fast pace, it implies he has lost the control, the perfection and intelligence he once had. The commas and dashes indicate an intensity of emotions. Poe uses noises to create atmosphere in the story. Such noises are the sound of the old mans heart beating louder and louder. The phrase is repeated through our, suggesting that the narrator is becoming guiltier and guiltier. It also implies that the narrator weakness has got the better of him because he then confesses his guilt in committing the brutal murder. The easiest way to do this is through its only democratically elected body: the European Parliament. In order for both internal members and external observers of the Union to perceive it as a legitimate democratic entity, the Union ought to seek to maximize the democratic utility of the European Parliament. As the only directly elected instit ution within the European Union, the European Parliament carries a special and unique responsibility in establishing and maintaining the democratic reputation of the entire European Union. In this paper, by first providing a description of the Parliament and the deficiencies of its current role within the Union, I will suggest a variety of steps to be taken by both the European Parliament and the European Union to foster awareness and support of the institution amongst the European Public. The concept of an European identity, the role and use of the media, and the quality of election campaigns are three interrelated ideas that, if dually cultivated, could have a highly beneficial impact on the awareness and support of the European Parliament amongst the public.
